Paddy Power targets online poker profits
PADDY POWER, Ireland’s biggest bookmaker, will this week launch a suite of online poker games to capitalise on one of the most lucrative areas of internet betting, writes Ciaran Hancock.
The bookmaker is planning a “soft launch” of Paddy Power Poker, which will involve an initial 200 players who have been pre-registered. An icon for the poker games was recently added to the Paddypower.ie website, although this has not yet been enabled. Analysts estimate that about £100m (€143m) a year is bet on online poker in the UK alone.
Midas Entertainment's President, George Gutierrez, remarked, "There is a unique buzz surrounding the Poker industry today with the growing number of land-based tournaments being produced by groups including the World Poker Tour; consecutive record jackpots at the World Series of Poker; the growing number of televised, land-based events on ESPN and the Travel Channel; and the newly released television series 'Tilt' on ESPN. Collaborations between online and land-based gaming groups, allowing online winners the chance to play in land-based tournaments, have been a huge hit. The past two World Series of Poker Champions earned their way into that tournament by winning online tournaments.
